I’ve met Marco a couple of years ago, when scouting for help for a second photographer at a wedding I was working on. We almost became friends since that day one. We share a lot of our everyday quest as freelancer photographers in the wedding industry. He and Fil are long time partners, and I had been talking to them about having a session. Marco, shy as he is said, “well… you know I am ok with it, but Fil is very shy”. So I messaged Fil about the ideia, and she said “OF COURRRRSE!”. And we went to Arrábida for a marvellous sunset surrounded by swallow birds. Arrábida is about 30 minutes from Lisbon, is a high mountain with amazing little beaches, at the end of Sado river. In a mix between mountain life and beach life, is a quiet little place to visit and enjoy nature. Around the round that scatters the mountain, we find off road spots to view all of Sado meeting the ocean as well as Tróia and Setúbal.

Finding a place for your couple’s photo shoot or engagement session is essencial. Most of the time I ask the couple for a special place, that is meaningful to them. It does not have to be the most dreamy or beautiful, for me it has to be a place that complements their story. Arrábida, Setúbal and Tróia, have exclusive places in which to marry. When Cátia and Nuno told me they were getting married, as a friend I was so so happy, that in the fact of not being able to be there ( or photograph it ) we had to do a photoshoot. These two are so out of the box that naturally we came up with this walk. So, we went to a place nearby their home, that they know well, but it was far from being the cute place for photoshoots. But that did not matter. Most importantly, they were very comfortable and at easy showing me around the places they knew.

So, we started crossing under the train road, ending up in the river front, and taking a back walk over the tracks. Most importantly for me, is that the couple feel relaxed and very at home during the photoshoot. And even though, they will tell you that they are ‘not into pictures’ their feedback was “I am so thrilled with the photos. Thank you from the heart!”. A few weeks later, I dove in to her bachelorette party. And that was a blast!

Mainly I insist that whatever you envision for your wedding day, it should be what happens. Look out for the vendors that share a similar view to make the job easier and smoother. They will partner up with you from day one, assuring that it is as you thought it through. However, there must be a clear and truthful vision of the overall picture. So a wedding planner should come in need at this point.

This is the photo album of Laura and Adriano’s winter park engagement in Lisbon. This was the first time meeting them in person. Their request for the engagement photoshoot was a place that could resemble lisbon. And even though the park is not a unique characteristic of the town, it overviews the revier and bridge. The couple wore matching knitted sweaters, matching the foggy, rainy day in winter lisbon. Therefore resembling london, where they live.

Long time friends, Laura and Adriano mirror their complicity and friendship. So it was fairly easy to capture their cuddles, hugs, smiles and kisses throughout the walk. This is by far the most important aspect in a photo shoot, to be yourself. Consequently, their wedding photo reportage came out as lightly and smoothly as the photo session, transparent to emotions and their longtime friendship and love.

WINTER PARK ENGAGEMENT – LISBON WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Winter in lisbon is very mild, allowing for sunny sessions all year long. Tapada das Necessidades, Jardim da Estrela, are some of my favourite parks to photowalk with couples. On the other hand, the city itself also provides amazing spots, Alfama and Graça just to name a few. For example, Min and Luis engagement photowalk, and Filipa and Artur portrait session for the wedding invitation.

Parks and gardens are one of my favourite spots to photograph in lisbon. So, most of the times when choosing a place with my clients, I always ask if they go to a nearby park for a walk. This shoot was also intended to make a few portraits for artist Margarida Fleming. to work on the invitation painting. So on a beautiful autumn afternoon, Filipa and Artur choose to take a walk at Jardim da Estrela and nearby Lapa neighbourhood.

So, for the three of us being architects, the tiled façades, and the narrow streets were a delight. Moreover, the couple, shy at the beginning, was then eager to suggest places and backgrounds. Later in 2019, they weeded at Filipa’s home town of Lapas in Torres Novas, in a very artsy elegant inspired wedding. Furthermore, her dress was her design, as well as the bouquet was made from the orchids of their home.

AUTUMN PARK ENGAGEMENT PHOTOGRAPHY – LISBON PORTUGAL

I always see each season with different eyes. It is not only the obvious, like the light and nature that changes. But it is also the ambiance. Furthermore, autumn is a very special season in Lisbon, because the streets are filled with roasted chestnuts sellers. The couple, whom I met a few months earlier, were shy, so a walk in a place where they usually go to, was a good ice breaker.

This is the day before wedding of Min and Luis. They wrote me saying they wanted to have some lisbon elements in their pictures. So, their request was for traditional tiles, old streets and a city view. Therefore, we strolled from Alfama do Graça, drinking ginjinha on the way.

Min from Korea and Luis from Portugal, came to Lisbon to have their wedding celebration with the Portuguese family. Previously, the couple had already done a traditional Korean ceremony in Min home town, and a celebration with friends back in london, where they live.

Alfama is one of the oldest neighbourhoods surrounding the hills of the Castle. The very narrow streets provide an amazing light at certain hours of the day. Graça miradouro, can show the whole river front up to the bridge. Consequently it became a very popular neighbourhood for couple’s photo walks.

CASCAIS WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER – LISBON ENGAGEMENT

In addition to this photoshoot, I was also their wedding photographer. A few days later, Min and Luis wedded in Cascais, in a very symbolic and intimate ceremony, full of colour, overviewing the atlantic ocean in Cascais. Elegance could be the single word to describe their wedding day.

The Azores islands, an archipelago in the heart of the atlantic ocean, has become popular. Almost raw, most of the islands take you to unimaginable places, with amazing waterfalls, and endless pastures. So, couples everywhere, have been travelling to the islands to get married. Lindsey was travelling with her parents through europe, when Joel surprised her with a proposal. A day later I flew to the island of Sao Miguel to travel with them for one day. They wedded a few months later back in America.

From waterfalls to roads full of hydrogenas, black sand beaches, the day ended at Mosteiros beach for a sunset and some pizza. Ain’t this an almost perfect day? So whether your proposal is in pijamas or in the middle of the atlantic ocean, have it portrayed. You will forever remember it, and this couple even used these gorgeous photos for their invitations and save the date cards.

DESTINATION WEDDING AZORES – WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER PORTUGAL

So, it has become quite popular in last years to marry abroad, and Portugal has therefore been a country of choice. Mainly due to weather, but also cheap flights, great venues amazing food, dedicated vendors. However it is important to plan things ahead very carefully. Importantly if you can is to travel to visit locations and meet vendors in person. But if you are very far away, have a wedding planner or coordinator to represent you and advice in the best possible way.

And although the islands are a perfect scenario for shootings, you still need to be adventurous to travel there. But meeting great people such as Lindsey and Joel is by far the greatest reward.
