For some years I’ve known Rita, so it was very natural for her to call me to portrait her second pregnancy. Her location of choice was LX Factory in Lisbon. She wanted the industrial vibe and architecture that is not very common in our city. Headed up for a winter morning, luckily very sunny and not extremely cold. The good thing about LX Factory is that it’s constantly changing it’s urban art. Not only because new brands establish their business their but also, new parts are undergoing renovations.

So every visit is full of surprises. Every time feels like the first time. And for photography is the same. Every new visit comes with new places uncovered. When planning pregnancy photoshoots I always have a talk with the woman or the couple. Some people prefer at home in the comfort of their home, others prefer outside. Which ever is your decision, always discuss it with your photographer to find the best solution.

Parks and gardens are one of my favourite spots to photograph in lisbon. So, most of the times when choosing a place with my clients, I always ask if they go to a nearby park for a walk. Rosa and Nuno took their pregnancy photoshoot to Gulbenkian park, in the heart of modern lisboa. The park itself is very well known for it’s architectural modernity, and it is integrated inside the Gulbenkian foundation. Inside, you can find the museum of modern art, the auditorium, library, restaurant and several spaces of exhibitions. 

Above all, the park is know for it’s paths, resembling different ambiances of flora and fauna. And also for it’s large population of ducks, that got used to hang around with visitors. Definitely a beautiful place to take a walk, anytime of the year or the day. When shooting pregnant women, I get different types of requests. Sometimes it’s in house shootings, that are to remain for the couple. Other times, just casual everyday life photo reportage. It is after all, a very intimate moment, full of vulnerability, so most important is of course your comfort.

Families are like trees and flowers, they expand and grow, becoming stronger. The first time I photographed Patricia and Marco, was on their after wedding portraits. They wanted to redo some formal portraits that they did not manage to take on their wedding day. A few months later, they called me for some more photos, this time with baby Fred on the way. So further on they called me once again for a christmas day at Parque das Conchas, with their toddler already grown and energetic walker.

It is a challenge and a responsibility to follow these families and become their personal photographer. Most important, becoming their living memory, allowing them to keep visual treasures such as photos. Therefore, I recommend that these shoots are done in a place of comfort for the child, where they can feel at ease and be themselves. Starting at home, or taking a walk outside, as long as it feels natural for them, it comes out just perfect. Have a look at a summer walk at Parque das Conchas, see how different the light and vegetation look like. Still beautiful thou!
