When Sofia first contacted me to portrait her pregnancy, she was shy. Pregnancy changes a woman body, and it can be defying being photographed in such a different shape as one is used to see themselves. Nor she had ideias on how to do it. So, I proposed that we should do it in the comfort of her house. Not only was the perfect place where she felt at ease, but at sunset the house had a beautiful golden light. As soon as baby Concha was born, she called me up, and a being a week old, I took some family bounded photos at their home, in a christmas mood.

So, it made perfect sense to be there for her christening, and for the first birthday. Sofia and Daniel would later on confess that I had become their personal family photographer. And what an honour to be present in the family’s most important days.

gravidez & recém nascido fotografia em lisboa

Quando a Sofia me contactou para fotografar a gravidez, a timidez tomou conta. A gravidez muda o corpo de uma mulher e pode ser desafiante ser-se fotografado durante este tempo, numa fase em que nos vemos de forma diferente. Também estava sem ideias sobre o que fazermos. Por isso, propus que fosse em casa. Não só pelo à vontade mas por que a luz final de tarde era um perfeito dourado. Assim que a bebé nasceu, ligaram-me para fazer uns retratos em casa com a recém nascida, num ambiente já natalício.

Claro que fez todo o sentido quando foi o batizado estar presente nesse dia, bem como no primeiro aniversário. Mais tarde viriam a confessar-me que me tinha tornado na fotógrafa pessoal da família em menos de um ano. E que honra ser testemunha nestes momentos tão importantes.

É um privilégio conhecer famílias e estar presentes nas suas vidas de tempos a tempos. Acima de tudo estabelecem-se relações, e novos encontros tornam-se mais ‘fáceis’ de fotografar. Torna-se já um hábito terem-me por perto de câmera na mão, e as fotos ficam mais espontâneas e naturais. Cria-se um elo que cresce e se nutre.

Being in contact with a family for a long time allows me to build lasting memories through their lives. It can be a birthday party, a pregnancy shoot, a newborn, or just a family moment. For this session at Parque da Cidade in Porto, the family chooce a location they related to. Lisbon is known for it’s beautiful light, but I must confess I adore Porto’s as well. It is important that these shoots are done in a place of comfort for the child and the family, where can feel at ease . We can start at home, and then take a walk outside, as long as it feels natural for you, it comes out just perfect. Being in Nature allows also to have wild life in picture as well. And the gooses were very curious.

Passeios pelo Parque da Cidade – Porto

Estar em contacto com as famílias ao longo de anos, permite-nos construir memórias que perdurem ao longo do tempo. Pode ser um aniversário, uma sessão de gravidez, um bebé, ou um simples momento em familia. Para esta sessão, foi escolhido o parque da cidade no Porto, um local que a familia escolheu. Mas a sessão poderá começar em casa e depois ser um passeio na rua, o importante é que seja natural, para o resultado ser perfeito. Estar na natureza também é um convite a que a fauna se junto à sessão, e os gansos estavam curiosos.

A longtime friend called me up one day to surprise his wife on mother’s day with a family photoshoot. Little did we knew that further one, I would also be part of one of the most important days of their little child. On this spring day, we took a walk with their dog in one of the most beautiful parks in lisbon. Before hand we talked about the baby’s times and adjusting accordingly to his hours of nap and play.

I do most of the times recommend that these shoots are done in a place of comfort for the child, where they can feel at ease and be themselves. Starting at home, or taking a walk outside, as long as it feels natural for them, it comes out just perfect. Likewise for dogs too! Because they also need to adapt to another human, new to them. And moreover, I need to feel fine around them too.

Passeios pelo parque

Um amigo de longa data liga-me um dia para oferecer à família uma sessão fotográfica. Mais tarde viria a estar presente também num dia importante para a vida do bebé. Neste dia de primavera decidimos passear levando o cão deles que adora o bebé e faz parte da história da família. Recomendo muitas vezes que estas sessões sejam feitas em locais de conforto do bebé, onde se sentem à vontade e sem alterar as rotinas, acertando com as horas de descanso e passeio. Começar em casa e depois dar um passeio é uma opção perfeita. O mesmo se aplica aos cães! Porque ambos precisam de se adaptar a alguém novo para eles. E eu a eles!

É um privilégio encontrar-me com as famílias de tempos a tempos para documentar o seu crescimento. O parque escolhido já foi palco de outra família, quer na sessão de gravidez quer depois com o bebé já crescido. Nao importa quantas vezes eu visito os mesmos locais para fotografar, de cada vez o resultado é sempre diferente. Visitar as famílias com regularidade também me permite estabelecer ligações tornando as sessões cada vez mais espontâneas e naturais.

Families are like trees and flowers, they expand and grow, becoming stronger. And some families love to reach higher, climbing their way to a clear view. Lovely kids that shows us the joy of outdoor activities and laughter. It is so good to hang around with them, and even if they feel shy, to win their trust and relax them in front of camera is a pure joy. 

Tânia and Bruno were no exception to most couples I portrait. They were very unease in front of camera. But in a few moments of talk and play, the couple just broke ice and became very much themselves in an ease. It is therefore important to communicate to feel what is happening and to breakthrough. 

Above all, I recommend that these shoots are done in a place of comfort for the children firstly, a place where they can feel at ease and be themselves. Starting at home, or taking a walk outside, as long as it feels natural for them, it comes out just perfect. This riverfront park is just on the outskirts of lisbon and has become very popular for walks. But lisbon is full of amazing parks, each one very different, but still amazingly beautiful.

Families are like trees and flowers, they expand and grow, becoming stronger. The first time I photographed Patricia and Marco, was on their after wedding portraits. They wanted to redo some formal portraits that they did not manage to take on their wedding day. A few months later, they called me for some more photos, this time with baby Fred on the way. So further on they called me once again for a christmas day at Parque das Conchas, with their toddler already grown and energetic walker.

It is a challenge and a responsibility to follow these families and become their personal photographer. Most important, becoming their living memory, allowing them to keep visual treasures such as photos. Therefore, I recommend that these shoots are done in a place of comfort for the child, where they can feel at ease and be themselves. Starting at home, or taking a walk outside, as long as it feels natural for them, it comes out just perfect.
