As a wedding photographer, I’m often asked about the best locations for photo sessions. Whether it’s a surprise proposal, an engagement shoot, a family vacation, or simply a way to capture memories from a getaway, Alfama has consistently remained my number one recommendation.

To begin with, there are several ways to explore the neighbourhood. You can start at the riverfront and make your way up to Graça, or alternatively, begin at the top and wander downhill. Either route is equally stunning, and in both cases, the sunset views are absolutely magical.

However, it’s worth remembering that Lisbon is a hilly city. Therefore, depending on your enthusiasm for walking, I always recommend bringing a comfortable pair of shoes in your backpack. Although there are quite a few steps along the way, the effort is more than rewarded by the scenery.

Sunset or sunrise?

When it comes to timing, I generally prefer sunset sessions over sunrise. However, both can work beautifully. More importantly, it’s best to avoid peak tourist hours whenever possible. Since Alfama is one of Lisbon’s most visited neighbourhoods, you may need to wait patiently for quieter moments before capturing cleaner shots. On the other hand, a little chaos can sometimes add character and authenticity to a photograph. So, from time to time, don’t be afraid to embrace the lively atmosphere.

Ginginha and pastel de nata!

Additionally, I highly recommend stopping for a ginginha during your walk. Whether you enjoy it at a local café or directly from one of the neighbourhood’s famous doorstep vendors, it’s a truly authentic Alfama experience. If you prefer something non-alcoholic, a pastel de nata paired with a coffee makes for an equally enjoyable break.

Likewise, as photographers, we naturally develop favourite corners and hidden gems over time. As a result, we get to know which spots work best throughout the year. Furthermore, different seasons and times of day transform the neighbourhood in unique ways, allowing the sunlight to interact differently with each street, square, and viewpoint.

Finally, no photo session in Alfama feels complete without taking in the breathtaking views from Graça. Whether you’re arriving at the top or making your way down, the panoramic scenery is truly the cherry on top of the cake. Alternatively, the riverfront area around Praça do Comércio (Terreiro do Paço) provides another spectacular setting and a wonderful way to conclude your session.
